1/16"=1' Architectural Thesis Model
By Ben Carr
Rensselaer Architecture, B. Arch 2008
"Dwelling on the Roof: A New Context for Development in NYC"
This final thesis envisions the potential re-use of rooftops in New
York as the elevation of a new part of the city, complete with housing,
commercial buildings, cultural attractions, and infrastructure.
Instead of being a separate or privatized zone for the super-rich, this
new neighborhood is considered as an extension of the existing city,
with many connections between rooftops and down to the ground to
stimulate public circulation. This model represents
12 blocks in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Dumbo, which was the focal
point of the thesis as a test area for new rooftop development,
adjacent to the Manhattan Bridge.
The "egg-crate" style base of the model was made out of 1/8" white
foam-core boards, which has lasercut Taskboard glued onto it in strips
to create the topography of the ground and the East River. On top
of this are the sidewalks, existing buildings and new additions, made
out of Taskboard and colored acrylic.

"For
this project we used a laser cutter to cut and score the Taskboard

worked very well with the laser cutter" Paul

is so much
easier to use than other boards.
How wonderful that I can get
a cut with one pass and not 3 and 4.
The ability to sand is
